Call Waiting with Caller ID lets the user see the calling number and/or name when a second caller is on the line.

Caller ID lets the user see the calling party’s name and number.

Cloud Phone System or Cloud PBX or Hosted IP PBX (Private Branch Exchange) is an internet-based phone system. It works by automatically answering all calls, then seamlessly routes them to the correct person, department, or extension.

Cloud servers store and deliver information through internet access. They perform the same as physical servers, are scalable for storage needs, and are accessible to many people at a time.

Communicator App lets the user access and use all of the features of uControl Cloud PBX phone and more on a mobile device or computer.

Dedicated Internet or Dedicated Internet Access (DIA) is a private-line internet connection that is not shared with other customers. It typically provides business features and higher speeds than shared internet lines.

DID means Direct-Inward-Dialing. This is a business line feature that enables dialing directly from outside telephones to internal station numbers without an attendant’s assistance, accomplished via special trunks and customer-owned phone equipment.

Ethernet is a wired connection that transfers information from device to device in a wired Local Area Network (LAN) or Wide Area Network (WAN).

EVPL, or Ethernet Virtual Private Line, delivers point-to-point Ethernet Virtual Connection (EVC) between a pair of dedicated user network interfaces (UNIs). It is an excellent choice for businesses with a main headquarters and multiple branch offices. EVPL is reliable, is flexible, and is a higher bandwidth alternative to time-division multiplex (TDM) private lines. EVPL is also sometimes called a Virtual Private Line or VPL.

Fiber lines, aka optical fibers, are small lines made of glass. They are bundled together in a fiber-optic cable. These lines transmit data as pulses of light and can transmit more data faster and over longer distances than other modes of transmission. They are used for fiber-optics phones, TV, and internet.

High-speed internet is internet service that downloads at speeds of 25 Mbps (Megabytes, or megabits, per second) or faster. High-speed internet is offered through DSL, cable, satellite, or fiber-optic lines.

Hosted Internet Protocol Private Branch Exchange (Hosted IP PBX) provides IP telephony and switching services between an IP telephone network and a public switched telephone network (PSTN) system.

Integrated Services Digital Network Primary Rate Interface (ISDN-PRI) delivers 23 voice channels and one data channel to companies over an Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN).

Internet Phone/SIP Trunking: SIP stands for Session Initiation Protocol. It works with IP-enabled PBX (Private Branch Exchange) to send voice and other unified communication through the internet. An easy term for SIP Trunking is “internet phone” and it works by breaking down a call into little digital packets and sending them (like mail) across a network to the receiver.

IP-PRI is an acronym for Internet Protocol Primary Rate Interface. IP-PRI provides high-quality voice communication via a high-speed internet connection. Dynamic PRI is an alternative for IP-PRI.

IP address is a code made up of numbers that identifies computers and other digital devices connected to a network, allowing them to pinpoint and communicate with other devices on the network. IP stands for Internet Protocol.

IP network uses Internet Protocol (IP) to send and receive messages between one or more computers. It is one of the most commonly used global networks.

Managed Firewall services include assessing security threats, monitoring network traffic, and maintaining the firewall infrastructure.

MaX UC Meeting is an add-on app that delivers rich voice and PBX features, video meetings, messaging, plus complete contact management features.

Metro-Ethernet (Metro-E) provides point-to-point or multipoint connectivity over a metropolitan area network.

Multiple Call Appearances makes and receives calls from multiple devices or locations on a single line.

Multi Line Hunt Groups direct incoming calls to a selection of lines in a specified sequence until one of the lines answers.

Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) routes traffic using the shortest path based on “labels,” rather than network addresses. This helps to facilitate forwarding over private wide area networks.

Paging/Intercom Features uses a phone to broadcast an announcement over one or more connected speakers.

PIC freeze prevents “slamming” or an unauthorized switch of services. If you have a primary inter-exchange carrier (PIC) freeze on your phone number, carriers cannot make changes without your permission. PIC stands for Primary Inter-Exchange Carrier.

POTS stands for Plain Old Telephone Service. POTS is also sometimes referred to as PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network). POTS relies on a physical wire to transmit voice from one end to the other.

Quality of service (QoS) lets organizations adjust their overall network traffic by prioritizing specific high-performance applications. It is usually applied to networks that carry traffic for resource-intensive systems like internet protocol television (IPTV), online gaming, streaming media, videoconferencing, video on demand (VOD), and Voice over IP (VoIP).

Security & Managed IT may also be known as Managed Security Service Providers or MSSP. These terms refer to an outsource that manages IT service upgrades, system changes, and modification, and monitors for security threats.

Service Level Agreement (SLA) is a critical component of any technology vendor contract that details the level of service you expect from a vendor. It spells out the metrics by which service is measured, as well as remedies or penalties if the agreed-upon service levels are not achieved.

Shared Line Appearance monitors another phone, receive its calls, and transfer or send to voicemail.

Speed Dial, Short Codes, Intercom Codes allow the user to place internal, external, and intercom calls with as little as 1 digit.

Trunk lines are a bulk of lines. When a trunk line is used within a PBX system, an extension is usually necessary to read a certain person because it enables the PBX system to properly route which call goes where. A trunk line can also be directly assigned to a person or location without using a PBX system.

TDM, TDM-PRI: TDM is an acronym for Time Division Multiplexing. It is the technology behind POTS (Plain Old Telephone Service), a copper-based voice solution that carries 23 analog voice channels.

Unified Communications is a cloud-delivered unified communications model that supports six communication functions such as enterprise telephony and audio, video and web conferencing meetings.

Voicemail Transcription allows the user to receive voicemail messages as text files via email.

VoIP is an acronym for Voice over Internet Protocol, and VoIP transmits calls from one place to the next through an internet connection.

VPN and IP VPNs: VPN is a networking technology that allows users to connect to their main network remotely via the public internet, which allows employees that work from home to connect to the company’s intranet so they can access shared files.

An IP VPN works largely the same, establishing seamless connectivity to the main network across an ISP with the additional use of Multiprotocal Label Switching (MPLS) technology that prioritizes internet traffic and avoids public gateways for increased security.

Web Portal allows management of calls, faxes, voicemails, and phone settings through an easy-to-use interface and PBX Administrators can view other lines and configure business-level features.

Wireless phone uses radio waves to transmit instead of a cord. A cell phone is a wireless phone.
